Hanley Wood Announces Winners of 2018 Multifamily Executive Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hanley Wood, the premier information, media, event, and strategic marketing services company serving the residential, commercial design, and construction industries, is pleased to announce the winners of its 2018 Multifamily Executive Awards. Three executives and 28 project winners were honored at a special event held during the 2018 Multifamily Executive Conference, which took place September 17-19 in Las Vegas.

Each year, MULTIFAMILY EXECUTIVE honors the industry's best and brightest with its prestigious MFE Awards competition. Winning projects, leaders, and initiatives are featured in the September and October issues of MFE and at http://www.multifamilyexecutive.com.

For the second time, MULTIFAMILY EXECUTIVE awarded a Hall of Fame honor to an executive whose career contributions have had a transformative impact on the industry as a whole.

This year, MULTIFAMILY EXECUTIVE is proud to honor Thomas S. Bozzuto, chairman and co-founder of the Greenbelt, Maryland-based Bozzuto Group, as our second Hall of Fame inductee. Over the course of his career, Bozzuto has led his now 2,600-employee company to success by focusing on customer service. In addition to a robust construction division that builds some $500 million worth of mixed-use properties each year, the company is one of the largest developers to do third-party property management (The Bozzuto Group ranks No. 12 on the 2018 NMHC Top 50 Managers list), handling 70,000 apartment units, and has had the highest online ranking among the country's 50 largest management companies for the past four years running.

"From the start, Tom has built his company with a clear focus on who Bozzuto is and what it wants to be as a business culture, fanatically committed to its renter and homeowner households' need for a place to prosper and enjoy a sense of sanctuary and well-being," says John McManus, vice president and editorial director of Hanley Wood's Residential Group. "With our induction of Tom Bozzuto into the MFE Hall of Fame, we salute a man who has built a brand that stands for all of what's best about multifamily neighborhoods today; who has built a culture that shines as an example other developer, owner, and property management enterprises can look up to; and who has served the entire multifamily business community championing multifamily as America's affordable housing."

Percival Vaz, founder and CEO of AMCAL in Los Angeles, was honored as the 2018 MFE Executive of the Year. Vaz and his wife, Lux, founded AMCAL 40 years ago in their garage and have slowly spent the past four decades nurturing the company into a respected firm that now builds affordable, market-rate, and student housing. The firm has developed more than 80 communities with 7,500 units and an equally impressive reputation for creating quality housing in California.

Jonathan Morgan, president of Morgan Properties JV in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, was honored as the 2018 MFE Rising Star. Since launching Morgan Properties JV, a division of his father's company Morgan Properties, in 2012, Morgan and his team have more than doubled the firm's total holdings, closing 35 transactions, resulting in the acquisition of approximately 23,000 units worth $3.5 billion. In the past year alone, his team closed five deals worth $1.2 billion to acquire 8,700 units.

The 2018 MFE Editors' Choice Award was presented to Memphis, Tennessee-based architecture firm Looney Ricks Kiss for its Crosstown Concourse project. The Memphis development, which also won a Grand Award in the Adaptive Reuse category, is a repurposed, 1.3-million-square-foot Sears Distribution Center that now stands as a "vertical mixed-use urban village," complete with retail, restaurants, fitness and health-care facilities, educational and arts venues, and professional spaces in addition to 265 apartment units. Crosstown Concourse is designed to house "people on the forefront of transforming Memphis: urban educators, health-care scientists and researchers, and artists," says the firm. Therefore, the development is focused on fostering engagement among the residents and within the community.
