Hyundai NEXO Makes First Appearance in Ontario with Provincial Government Officials

MARKHAM, ON, Oct. 2, 2018 /CNW/ - Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. today is participating in a ride-and-drive event in Toronto outside of the Ontario Legislative Building in collaboration with The Canadian Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Coalition of automakers.

Today's event marks the first time that NEXO, Hyundai's next-generation fuel-cell vehicle, is on display for Ontario government policymakers. At the ride-and-drive, provincial government officials and selected members of the media will have the opportunity to test-drive NEXO to witness the vehicle first-hand and to experience fuel-cell technology in action.

Fuel-cell vehicles don't require gasoline, but instead run on advanced fuel-cell technology that uses Hydrogen. When Hydrogen and Oxygen are combined from the atmosphere into the fuel-cell stack, electricity is produced via an electrochemical reaction. The only by-products of this process are water vapour and power, resulting in environmentally-friendly vehicles that yield zero-emissions.

"Hyundai Auto Canada is committed to enabling a greener, more sustainable future through the use of Hydrogen-powered vehicles," said Don Romano, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. "Hyundai is the first automotive manufacturer to bring two generations of fuel-cell vehicles to the Canadian market first with Tucson fuel-cell, and now NEXO. Events such as today's Ride-and-Drive highlight the need for more infrastructure and support for Hydrogen-powered transportation. This, combined with more general awareness will help us and other automotive manufacturers continue to bring eco-friendly solutions to the masses."

NEXO is the newest technological flagship vehicle to enter Hyundai's expanding product line of eco-vehicles. NEXO can be refueled with Hydrogen in as little as five minutes and has an estimated range of more than 600 km on a single charge.

In addition to NEXO and the Tucson fuel-cell, Hyundai's eco-range also includes the IONIQ, the first vehicle in the world to offer three electrified powertrain options in one platform (hybrid, electric and electric plus), Sonata HEV and PHEV, and Kona EV.

Globally, Hyundai Motor Company has committed to launching 38 electrified vehicles by 2025, made up of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), electric vehicles, and Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
